Tar Heels Conclude Perfect Weekend With Doubleheader Sweep
February 28, 2016 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – The Tar Heels finished out a perfect 4-0 weekend on Sunday by defeating Fairfield and Georgetown to claim the Carolina Classic crown. Junior Kendra Lynch went 5-for-6 with a double and two home runs, while claiming two victories in the circle by tossing eight-and-a-third shutout innings. Jillian Ferraro got her bat going, slugging 1.000 with two doubles on Sunday, as the Tar Heels finished the day with a .319 average, .596 slugging percentage and five stolen bases.
The doubleheader sweep improves UNC's record to 8-6, while Fairfield dropped to 0-4 and Georgetown slipped to 2-9.
“I don't know that the first game was really pretty,” said head coach Donna J. Papa. “I'm kind of disappointed at how we started the day making some errors. The good thing about it is, we found ways to come out on top. We've never really given up. That's the one thing I really like about this team, we have a lot of grit. They fight back. They're not just going to roll over and die.
“This was a confidence builder for us,” said Lynch. “We needed this. We needed to show that we could come back in tough situations, not get down. Not go inward, but really just take care of it. So this was a big weekend for us. Just take control of the game and just kind of go forward with the season.”
The Tar Heels head out West next weekend for the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Carolina will have its work cut out, facing multiple top-25 opponents, including opening the weekend against 2015 Women's College World Series Runner-Up No. 2 Michigan at Noon PT on Friday, March 4. UNC will also face (RV) Long Beach State, No. 25 California, Oregon State and the host Titans.
