December 10, 2016 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL --- Joey Ward and Ethan Ramos knocked off ranked opponents but No. 6 Nebraska took eight of 10 bouts to win 30-6 over No. 22 North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Ward knocked off No. 11 Colton McCrystal at 141 pounds before Ramos beat No. 20 Micah Barnes 11-5 at 174.
Nebraska (6-0) got off to a flying start with back-to-back bonus point wins at 125 and 133. No. 8 Tim Lambert pinned James Szymanski in the first period before No. 4 Eric Montoya beat Tyrone Klump 14-2.
Ward scored UNC's first takedown of the dual late in the opening period against McCrystal and carried a 3-0 lead into the third against the Nebraska 141-pounder. McCrystal got two in the dying moments but it wasn't enough as Ward improved to 9-1 on the year with his second win over a ranked opponent.
Ramos was dominant late in each period in his 11-5 victory over No. 20 Barnes. The eighth-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds took down his opponent at the end of both the first and second and was working hard for a major in the third before time ran out. Ramos is now 5-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in dual competition.
No. 3 T.J. Dudley's tech fall at 184 highlighted the final three bouts for Nebraska, which completed an ACC sweep after beating NC State on Friday evening.
Carolina returns to competition Jan. 1-2 as the Tar Heels travel to Chattanooga for the annual Southern Scuffle.
