CHAPEL HILL—The Tar Heels move to a 5-2 record for the season after falling to Fork Union Military Academy 66-73 on Wednesday Jan. 20. For only the second time this season, the scoreboard was not in their favor as the UNC JV team entered the locker room at halftime. They only trailed 30-31, but Fork Union proved early on that they were going to make it a tough game. In most of the games this season, UNC has made their wins look easy, so the close match up brought a new sort of intensity and energy to the team as well as the crowd.
Coach C.B. McGrath, as usual, spoke highly of his team's performance. "I thought we really competed on both ends of the court today. I am so proud of our effort and fight throughout the entire game. Fork Union deserves credit too though. They made the plays on both ends that they needed to get the victory and we were close, but just didn't get it done. They made some big shots we weren't making today, but I know will continue to work hard and learn from this game."
Junior Chandler Goodson, who has been out most of the season due to injury, had a strong second game back, following Gillespie with 10 points for the Tar Heels. "It's great to be back. We played really hard today, but it just came down to the fact that we missed more shots than they did. We didn't panic though. We ran our press and trap very well, and our point guards handled the pressure very well. As a team, we gave our best effort and you can't really be mad at that."
The Tar Heels will return to the Dean Dome on Saturday, the 30th, at 1 o'clock to face Central Carolina Community college. Don't forget, the first 22,000 fans always get in free! GoHeels FreeJV
