Georgia Tech Sweeps Doubleheader With Tar Heels

ATLANTA -- UNC dropped its doubleheader at Georgia Tech on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets won game one 6-2 before claiming a 9-6 decision in the second game.
Georgia Tech (21-16, 10-11 ACC) controlled game one, but Kristen Brown had two hits with four RBIs to help Carolina (21-20, 12-9 ACC) take an early 6-0 lead in game two before the Jackets exploded with seven runs in the third inning to take over the lead for good.
Game One: Georgia Tech 6, UNC 2
The Jackets stung first in game one as Ashley Thomas drew a walk, advanced to second on a ground out and then scored on Ashley Rudnik's RBI single through the left side.
UNC answered in the second to even the game at 1-1. After Amber Parrish reached base on a fielder's choice, Stephanie Krider came in to run. She advanced to second as Kendra Lynch drew a walk and then made it to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Elena Covert's sac fly to left field.
K Fullem singled to lead off for GT in the fourth and then scored on K JOhnsky's triple to center. Johnsky came home on an RBI single by Thomas, who then scored on H Downs' triple through the left side.
Carolina tacked on one more in the sixth as Amy Nece drew a walk, advanced to third on Kristen Brown's single and then came home on Jenna Kelly's RBI single up the middle.
Leading 4-2, the Jackets added two more in the bottom of the sixth to secure their win. Lionberger doubled to left center and then moved to third on a ground out before scoring on Thomas's second RBI single of the game. Downs then singled through the left side, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring the final run on Rudnik's double through the right side.
Lori Spingola (15-11) took the loss, giving up four runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out three in 3.2 innings in the circle. Lauren Batten pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up five hits and two runs with one strikeout.
Game Two: Georgia Tech 9, UNC 6
The Tar Heels were the first to score in game two as Aquilla Mateen led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on another bunt single by Nece. Mateen then scored on Brown's double to left center.
Carolina added three more in the second on Brown's three-run blast to center, and Jordan Scarboro's two-run homer in the third made it 6-0, Carolina.
Georgia Tech responded in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs on six hits to take over the 7-6 lead. Four singles led to the first RBI before Rudnik added another for two more runs. Pierannunzi then smashed a grand slam out right field to give the Jackets a lead they'd hold on to.
Tech added another pair of runs in the fifth on Lionberger's two-RBI single to secure the 9-6 win and sweep the doubleheader.
Lynch (1-5) took the loss for game two, pitching 2.1 innings while giving up six hits, seven runs and two walks with two strikeouts. Spingola fanned three and gave up five hits, two runs and a walk in 3.2 innings of work.
