No. 25 USC Upstate Tops UNC 1-0
March 7, 2014 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 25 USC Upstate held the Tar Heels to just one hit in a 1-0 win Thursday at Anderson Stadium.
The Spartans' Lexi Shubert (10-0) surrendered only one hit to Erin Satterfield, a double to right in the third, to lead Upstate (20-2).
"I'm definitely disappointed with today's loss, especially with how well we played on Sunday at Virginia Tech," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Their pitcher did a great job, and we didn't do a good job of executing. Lori Spingola was outstanding for us on the mound today, but we didn't do our job of putting the ball in play and putting pressure on them. It was disappointing today, but we have to put this behind us and move forward as we get ready to face Syracuse this weekend."
Lori Spingola pitched a strong game for Carolina, giving up six hits and fanning six in the loss as North Carolina moves to 8-9 (2-1 ACC) for the season.
Upstate got on the board in the second as Cheyenne Griffin led off the second with a double to left, advanced to third on a single by Maddison Kieffer and then scored as Kendall Settlemyre reached on a fielder's choice.
Up Next: UNC hosts ACC newcomer Syracuse this weekend for the Tar Heels' first home conference series. Game times are 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
