March 30, 2014 | Women's Basketball
Fourth-seed North Carolina (26-9) enters the game having won five of its last six games, and defeated the Gamecocks 74-66 back in December in a neutral court game in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Last time out, UNC raced out to a 26-point lead midway through the second half in a 62-53 win over Michigan State to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011 and the 16th time in program history.
Back on Dec. 18 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, freshman forward Stephanie Mavunga's 20-point, 12-rebound performance was critical for the Tar Heels. Diamond DeShields added 17 points, while Xylina McDaniel and Allisha Gray added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Aleighsa Welch paced South Carolina (29-4) with 23 points. Tiffany Mitchell had 18 points and Elem Ibiam had 14 points.
DeShields leads Carolina in scoring at 18.1 points per game, followed by Gray (14.0), McDaniel (11.6) and Mavunga (10.7).
