CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina split their final two home matches of the season on Saturday, dropping their first match to Pittsburgh, but cruising in their second match against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In the first match against Pittsburgh, the Tar Heels started strong, but ultimately came up short, 22-12. In their second match, North Carolina won the first five matches by fall and captured the win, 32-15.
Nathan Kraisser started off both matches emphatically at 125, winning both in dramatic fashion. In his bout against Pittsburgh, Nathan pulled out a decision over #16 Anthony Zanetta in a close 6-4 victory. After an early takedown in the first period, Kraisser took Zanetta down again in the third period and was able to hold on for the decision. Against SIUE, he pinned his opponent, Dakota Leach, in the third period to give the Heels an early 6-0 lead.
At 133, Troy Heilmann lost a tough match to #20 Shelton Mack, 12-6. Mack proved effective in the neutral position, taking Heilmann down five times. Heilmann received a forfeit from SIUE.
#6 Evan Henderson lost his first match at 141 to Pittsburgh's Edgar Bright, 3-1. After no scoring in the first period, Henderson escaped in the second period to take a tentative 1-0 lead. However, Bright escaped and subsequently took Henderson down late in the third period to complete the upset and give Pittsburgh a 6-3 lead. Henderson rebounded against SIUE, pinning his opponent, John Petrov, in 53 seconds to give UNC an 18-0 lead.
At 149, Christian Barber finished the day undefeated at 149. His first victory against Pittsburgh, an exciting 4-2 decision over Mikey Racciato, swung the momentum in North Carolina's favor. Barber managed to keep Racciato down during the entire second period and got a crucial reversal in the third period that secured him the victory. Against SIUE, he managed a technical fall over his opponent, Karsten Van Velsor, late in the second period.
Despite giving up an early takedown, Jake Crawford cruised to a 9-5 victory over Ronnie Garbinsky of Pittsburgh. Crawford grabbed a takedown and two near fall points in the second period to lock down the win and a 9-6 lead for UNC. He defeated his SIUE opponent resoundingly, pinning Logun Taylor with three seconds left in the first period.
At 165, John Michael Staudenmayer shut out Geno Morelli, 4-0, to give UNC its largest lead of the match against Pittsburgh, 12-6. After two periods of no scoring, Staudenmayer escaped and then took down Morelli in the third period to win the match. He also defeated Matthew Lester of SIUE by a margin of 4-0. Barber, Crawford, and Staudenmayer, all underclassmen, bounced back to go undefeated on Saturday after each dropping matches against The Citadel in their last match on February 16.
Scott Marmoll dropped both his matches at 174 on Saturday. He lost to #7 Tyler Wilps in a major decision, 16-6. He was also defeated by Jake Residori of SIUE, 6-2.
After falling in a close match to Pittsburgh's #6 Max Thomusseit at 184 by a margin of 4-0, Alex Utley was injured during his match against SIUE's Deshoun White and was unable to complete the match. The injury, which occurred early in the first period, prevented him from continuing which led to a forfeit as the injury time expired.
At 197, Frank Abbondanza lost his first match against #17 Nick Bonaccorsi by fall (4:27), which was part of a strong Pittsburgh finish that gave them the ultimate victory in the match. He also lost to Josh Wood of SIUE in a decision, 8-1.
Bob Coe lost both of his 285 matches by an 8-1 margin on Saturday. The first match was against #19 P. J. Tasser of Pittsburgh and the second against SIUE's David Devine.
