November 3, 2014 | Fencing
Tar Heels took second in both men's and women's sabre and placed three fencers among in the top eight spots in both of those weapons at the Temple Open Saturday and Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa.
"It was a very good weekend," UNC coach Ron Miller said. "Obviously, sabre dominated, both men and women, and that was fun to watch."
The women fenced on Saturday, with senior Gillian Litynski second in sabre, sophomore Sarah Hanvy third and sophomore Caitlin Malone eighth. UNC's top epee finisher was freshman Elli Moreno in ninth. The top finisher in foil was sophomore Amanda Lalezarian in 19th.
In the men's competition on Sunday, Evan Philpot took second in sabre, Mason Erb tied for third and Christophe Ruenz placed fifth. Two Tar Heels were in the top five in men's epee with Parker Williams tied for third and Michael Gopman-Slonim fifth.
The top Carolina fencer in men's foil was Harry Adams in 14th.
"This was a very good confidence-builder for the team," Miller said. "This is always the season's jumping-off point and a very good early test for us. I'm pleased with the results."
Next up for UNC is the North American Cup, in which some of the Tar Heels will compete Friday through Monday in Louisville, Ky. The team will travel to the Ohio State Dual Meets on Nov. 16.
