Tar Heels Fall To Terrapins, 18-15

CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina won four straight bouts at the middle weights and five total on the night but fell to Maryland, 18-15, Friday at Carmichael Arena. Evan Henderson, Christian Barber, Jake Crawford, John Michael Staudenmayer and Frank Abbondanza were winners for the Tar Heels, who return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against Navy.
Maryland (5-7, 1-2 ACC) got off to a quick start with Billy Rappo topping No. 20 Nathan Kraisser, 9-4, at 125. Tyler Goodwin made it 6-0 in favor of the Terps with a 7-4 win over Troy Heilmann at 133.
Henderson opened the scoring for Carolina at 141, as the All-America junior dominated Shyheim Brown for a 4-0 decision to push his overall record to 26-3 on the year. Barber then continued his solid work at 149 with a 7-5 win over Derrick Evanovich to even the dual at 6.
Carolina (5-7, 0-2 ACC) took its first lead of the night thanks to Crawford, who used a second-period takedown to defeat Ben Dorsay at 157, 4-2.
Staudenmayer made it four straight Tar Heel winners, as the redshirt sophomore took control early en route to a 7-1 win over Josh Snook at 165.
Maryland began its comeback at 174, as Ty Snook used a 7-point opening period to defeat Scott Marmoll, 7-2. The Terps then took the lead with a major decision from No. 1-ranked Jimmy Sheptock at 184. Sheptock, who is now 21-0 on the year, scored three takedowns in the third to win 13-3 and give UM a 13-12 lead.
Abbondanza gave Carolina its last lead of the night with a 12-7 win over Tony Gardner at 197. Abbondanza raced out to a 7-1 advantage after one thanks to a pair of takedowns and a 3-point near fall, and the Mount Sinai, N.Y., junior was never threatened in the win.
The Terrapins won the dual at heavyweight, however, as No. 7 Spencer Myers improved to 18-2 with a 16-0 technical fall over Bob Coe after 4:48.
UNC finishes its homestand Saturday at 2 p.m. against Navy.
