CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Tar Heels downed ACC rival Virginia Tech 3-2 on Friday to remain undefeated at Anderson Stadium this season and improve to 24-12 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
After two scoreless innings, Amanda Ake homered over right center to put Virginia Tech up 1-0 in the top of third.
With just two hits on the board for Carolina heading into the fourth, Amy Nece drew a walk before Jenna Kelly hit her second home run of the season over left to bring in Nece and give the Tar Heels the 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Ake recorded her second home run of the game to tie the score at 2-2.
The Tar Heels answered in the bottom half with a solo shot to center by Haleigh Dickey, her sixth of the season.
The Hokies had two runners on base in the top of the seventh with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Lori Spingola finished the game.
Spingola pitched for all seven innings for Carolina, striking out six and giving up four hits and three walks.
Playing for a full crowd of 726 at Anderson Stadium, UNC welcomed Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, who threw out the first pitch of the game. View a photo album of Rivera's first pitch here.
