Carolina Split Duals At Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - North Carolina split a pair of duals Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C. falling to No. 22 Northwestern 20-15 before besting host Campbell 31-10 to cap off the day. Five different Tar Heels went 2-0 on the day.
Carolina dropped its opening dual to No. 22 Northwestern in a dual that went down to the final bout. Northwestern to a 4-0 lead with a major decision at 125 pounds before UNC reeled off three straight decisions.
Brock LiVorio claimed a 7-5 decision at 133 pounds against Jameson Oster before No. 20 Evan Henderson downed Colin Shober by an 8-0 margin to put Carolina in front 6-4.
Nick Heilmann extended UNC's lead to 9-4 with a 6-2 decision at 149 pounds. The lead would be short lived as undefeated No. 2 Jason Welch claimed an 18-2 tech fall over Jon Burns to even the score at 9-9.
Northwestern earned wins at 165 and 174 pounds with a major decision and a decision to take a 16-9 lead with three bouts left. Senior Thomas Ferguson earned a 7-3 decision over Robert Kellogg to pull within four and 2011 NCAA Qualifier Zac Bennett added a 9-4 decision against John Schoen to make the score 16-15 with one bout left.
Freshman Frank Abbondanza took on No. 12 Mike McMullan in the heavyweight division where McMullan clinched the dual for the Wildcats with a 14-1 major decision.
The Tar Heels bounced back in a big way in the nightcap against host Campbell with an impressive 31-10 win.
Brian Bokoski got the Tar Heels off to a great start with a pin of Grabiel Soto in just 1:20 to give Carolina a 6-0 lead. Brock LiVorio made it 10-0 with a 14-6 major decision over Joey Rizzolino at 133 pounds.
No. 20 Evan Henderson earned his second win of the day with an 8-1 decision over Jordan Tolbert at 141 pounds to give UNC a 13-0 advantage before Nick Heilmann claimed a 5-1 decision over Mark Hartenstine putting the Tar HEels in front 16-0.
Wins by Campbell at 157 and 174 pounds gave the Fighting Camels six points while senior Kyle Kiss answered with a 3-0 decision over Ryan Krecker to go up 19-6.
Ferguson and Bennett took over for the Tar Heels as Ferguson picked up a pin of Matthew Cox in 4:59 to clinch the dual for Carolina. Bennett added to the Tar Heel tally with a pin of John Merickel in just 1:08 for six more team points before Joe Nolan claimed an 8-0 major decision over Frank Abbondanza at heavyweight.
The win was Carolina's second in its last three duals and the Tar Heels are now 4-14 on the year in duals and will take to the road next weekend to close out the regular season against Sacred Heart and The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
