
Tar Heels Fall To No. 13 Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina fell by a 25-10 margin to visiting No. 13 Maryland Friday night at Carmichael Arena. Three Tar Heels earned victories led by sophomore Corey Mock at 157 pounds who pulled an upset over No. 11 Kyle John with an 11-2 major decision. Carolina will return to the mat Saturday at 1 p.m. when it takes on Navy.
Friday night's match started at heavyweight as No. 8 Spencer Myers earned Maryland a quick six points as he pinned freshman Frank Abbondanza in 1:39. The pin put the momentum in Maryland's corner as the Terps were able to claim narrow decision over the next bouts.
Shane Gentry of Maryland and North Carolina's Brian Bokoski battled to the bitter end before Gentry was able to escape with a 7-6 win. Bokoski jumped out to a 4-2 lead with a pair of takedowns in the first period. Gentry evened things up with a late two-point near fall at the end of the second period before the back and forth third. Gentry earned an escape before Bokoski registered his third takedown of the bout with 30 seconds remaining. Gentry picked up a last-second reversal on Bokoski to claim the bout by a 7-6 margin.
Maryland made it a 12-0 margin after Geoffrey Alexander held Brock LiVorio scoreless as Alexander posted a 3-0 decision over the Tar Heel senior.
Freshman Evan Henderson pulled in three points for the Tar Heels at 141 pounds to make the deficit nine at 12-3. Henderson entered the week ranked No. 20 in the country and held serve over Frank Goodwin of Maryland by claiming a 4-2 decision. Henderson used a reversal in both the first and third periods for his four-point total.
The Terrapins upped their lead to 16-3 as Ben Dorsay posted a major decision over UNC's Jon Burns at 149 pounds as Dorsay ran out to a 15-2 tally.
Sophomore Corey Mock answered for the Tar Heels with the bout of the night for the Tar Heels. Mock took on No. 11 Kyle John and held a one-point lead after the opening period by trading takedowns and getting an escape. Mock then claimed a two-point near fall for the only scoring in the second period before going to work in the third period.
Starting on bottom the No. 19 ranked Mock turned a reversal into two point less than 45 seconds into the period before getting a three-point near fall and a point for riding time to take the bout in major decision fashion, 11-2. The win moved Mock's ACC record to 3-0 on the year.
Senior Kyle Kiss battled undefeated and second-ranked Josh Asper at 165 pounds looking to keep the Tar Heel winning streak going. Asper jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period with a pair of takedowns and held Kiss off over the last two periods to claim a 6-2 decision. The Maryland win extended the Terrapins' lead to 19-7.
No. 15 Jimmy Sheptock locked the dual up for the Terrapins with a 9-4 decision at 174 pounds as he took on UNC's Alex Utley. Sheptock took a 2-1 lead after the first period with a takedown before Utley picked up an escape. Sheptock claimed an escape followed by a takedown in the second period for a 5-1 advantage. Utley countered with an escape and takedown of his own to pull within one at 5-4 but Sheptock was able to escape and added a last-second takedown for the final margin.
Senior Thomas Ferguson claimed Carolina's third win of the night at 184 pounds when he used a last period reversal to post two points with 1:25 remaining. Ferguson was able to ride out Maryland's Ty Snook until the final horn to add a point of riding time for the 3-0 decision. The win made the team score 22-10 in favor of the Terrapins.
The final bout of the night featured No. 5 Christian Boley of Maryland and UNC's Zac Bennett with Boley coming out with an 8-3 decision win to provide the final 25-10 tally. Bennett jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a takedown less than 40 seconds into the match but Boley countered with an escape followed by a takedown of his own to claim the first period.
A pair of takedowns by Boley in the second period gave the fifth-ranked Boley a 7-3 advantage that he would not relinquish claiming the bout by an 8-3 margin.
Up next for the Tar Heels is the final home regular season dual when the Midshipmen of Navy come into Carmichael Arena for a dual at 1 p.m.
