Tar Heels Fall To Fordham 1-0

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA --- Fordham scored one run in the first frame to defeat North Carolina 1-0 Sunday in the final game of the 2011 Citrus Classic. Lori Spingola suffered the one-run loss as UNC falls to 13-8 overall.
Spingola (10-6) allowed one run on five hits over six innings of work. The freshman fanned seven Ram batters and issued just one walk.
The Tar Heels managed just three hits and left eight runners on base. Haleigh Dickey, Cara Vitale and Logan Foulks posted the lone hits for UNC.
Fordham jumped out to a 1-0 lead scoring one run on two hits in the first frame. A Gabby Luety RBI single scored Lindsay Kay Bright to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. Spingola ended the frame with a strikeout.
Carolina threatened in the second frame loading the bases with just one out. Fordham pitcher Jen Mineau escaped the bases loaded jam unscathed with a groundout and strikeout. Carolina stranded three and trailed 1-0 after three frames of play.
The Tar Heels posed another scoring threat in the sixth frame. After a series of walks loaded the bases with two outs Carolina looked to even the score at one or take the lead. Mineau again wriggled out of the jam with a huge strikeout. The Tar Heels left seven runners on base and trailed 1-0 after six innings.
In their final frame, Foulks led off the seventh with a single through the right side. Kelli Wheeler nearly gave UNC the lead belting a towering shot just left of the left field foul pole. A pair of fly outs and a strikeout sealed the 1-0 win for Fordham.
