CHAPEL HILL -- Lori Spingola tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout to lead North Carolina over Charlotte 4-0 Wednesday in game one of a doubleheader at Anderson Stadium. Tisha Mahon registered a career-best three hits improving Carolina to 10-5 on the season.
Spingola (9-3) struck out 10 batters over seven shutout innings of work. The freshman is now 5-0 in her last five starts, allowing just two runs over her last 34 innings in the circle.
Mahon led a UNC attack that generated four runs on nine hits with three hits. Kelli Wheeler added a solo home run and also scored a pair of runs. Brittany Robinson collected two hits and a RBI. Ally Blake and Haleigh Dickey both posted a hit and RBI.
Carolina broke a scoreless tie in the second frame. Dickey singled up the middle and pinch-runner Amy Nece later scored on a Robinson RBI single. The Tar Heels stranded two runners in the inning, but owned a 1-0 lead after two frames.
Spingola picked up where she left off last week. The freshman right-hander struck out seven batters through the first three frames and allowed just two hits.
Carolina stretched their lead to 2-0 in the third frame. Wheeler uncorked her third home run of the season with a solo shot over the left center field fence. The Tar Heels were in front 2-0, but stranded four runners after four.
The Tar Heels got back on the board in the fifth frame. After a walk issued to Wheeler, Mahon registered her third hit of the game with a bunt single. Blake then launched a RBI double off the wall in left center to score one run. Dickey then hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score Mahon and give UNC a 4-0 advantage.
Spingola scattered a pair of hits in the final frames, but tossed a scoreless seventh to seal the shutout win. The Atlanta, Ga., native has now tossed four consecutive complete-game shutouts in her last four starts.
