Elon Upends Carolina, 1-0
March 17, 2010 | Softball
Elon struck early when Tomeka Watson launched a home run to center field in the third inning. With Elon still up to bat, Tar Heels right fielder Anna Roberts made a spectacular diving grab robbing Elon of a hit and escaping the inning only trailing, 1-0.
Carolina's offense never could muster any runs as they fall to Elon for the first time since March 5, 1998.
The Tar Heels offensively only gathered five hits in the game, and no player advancing past second base the entire game. Elon's (6-1) Erin O'Shea did not allow Carolina to have an extra-base hit and shut out the Tar Heels. This is the first time this season Carolina has lost a game in which they outhit the opponents.
The Tar Heels' bright spot was senior pitcher (10-4) Amber Johnson, who outside of the home run to Watson, pitched a fine game, striking out five batters and only gathering four hits and one earned run.
Carolina next takes the field tomorrow traveling to UNC Greensboro at 5:00 p.m.
