Tar Heels Rally Past Belmont And Defeat Davidson

BELMONT ABBEY, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team defeated Belmont Abbey 22-16 and Davidson 29-10 Saturday night at the Wheeler Center for the squad's sixth and seventh wins of the season in dual meets. Carolina's Keenan Duffie pinned Belmont Abbey's Chris McClafferty in the 165 pound weight class to lead the Tar Heels to victory. Four other Tar Heels won their respective weight class in the win.
Belmont Abbey took an early 6-0 lead, but Jeremy Shaw defeated Jake Calvin in the 141 pound weight class to put Carolina on the board. Thomas Ferguson, competing in the 157 pound weight class, and Keenan Duffie, wrestling at 165 pounds, also recorded victories for the Tar Heels.
Carolina took the lead after the eighth match when Benjamin Fiacco defeated Jerami Bartley at 184 pounds. Belmont Abbey tied the match at 16-16 with a win at 197 pounds. Justin Dobies' win by forfeit in the final match-up at 285 pounds secured the win for the Tar Heels.
Ferguson (157) and Duffie (165) recorded back-to-back technical falls in the win over Davidson. Justiin Shields (125), Jake Shaw (141), Robert McCarthy (174), Andrew Cekuta (197) and Justin Dobies (285) all recorded defeats in the win over Davidson.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday against Duke in Durham, N.C.
