
Williamson, Sawicki, Nadeau Lead UNC At Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore Kaitlin Williamson took fifth in the women's foil, junior Jennifer Sawicki was sixth in the women's sabre and freshman Kevin Nadeau was 10th in the men's foil as North Carolina's fencers competed at the Penn State Garret Open Saturday and Sunday. The Tar Heel trio led the way as UNC had at least one fencer in the top 16 in all but men's epee in the open-format competition.
In addition to Williamson's finish in women's foil, junior May-Lynne Chen-Contino was 27th, sophomore Hannah Thurman was 35 and senior Jessica Wacker was 41st.
In women's epee, sophomore Melissa Litschi was 15th and senior Christina Abruzzini was 17th, missing the top 16 by just one touch. In addition, sophomore Mary Helen Marino was 44th, junior Annie Moran was 46th and junior Anna Ballance was 57th.
After Sawicki in women's sabre, junior Patti Sanders was 22nd, senior Mary Borgo 23rd and senior Jennifer Clark 26th.
On the men's side, senior Bobby Ziechmann made the top 16 in men's sabre, finishing 14th. Sophomore Kevin Ziechmann was 20th, senior Will Randolph 22nd, junior John Powell 24th and sophomore David Winer 27th.
Following Nadeau in men's foil, senior Alex Grigorenko was 36th, sophomore David Skwerer 39th, sophomore Justin Pruitt 41st and junior Caleb Pardue 56th.
The top finish in men's epee was senior Benjamin Gellis at 31. Junior Nick Stone finished 33rd, senior Sean Skwerer 39th, sophomore Jarrett Rodrigues 44th, freshman Andy Valiunas 45th and sophomore Eric Hsieh 51st.
The Tar Heels compete this Sunday at Haverford College in MACFA Dual Meets.
