Tar Heels Down Virginia, 25-12

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With the victories in the first four bouts of the evening, North Carolina (3-2, 2-0 ACC) jumped out to a 15-0 lead and held on for a 25-12 victory over Virginia (3-6, 0-2 ACC) in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action Friday at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels are now 2-0 versus the Cavaliers this season following Friday's win and a 25-9 victory over the Cavaliers at last weekend's Virginia Duals.
Tar Heel sophomore Bobby Shaw opened the match with a 7-5 win over Anthony Burke at 125, and Virginia forfeited at 133 to give the Tar Heels a 9-0 advantage. UNC freshman Isaiah Britton then pushed the lead to 12-0 with a 7-2 win over Virginia's Aaron Martin at 141.
Carolina freshman Chris Ramos posted the fourth straight win in an exciting bout at 149. After trailing Virginia's Paul Dunstan 1-0 entering the final period, Ramos sent the match into extra time with an escape. He then put up five points in overtime with a takedown and a near fall for a 6-1 victory. Ramos, now 11-5 on the season, also defeated Dunstan last week.
Following Ramos' victory, Virginia won the next three bouts to trim the Tar Heel lead to 15-12. After decisions by Paul Bjorlo at 157 and Will Durkee at 165, Cavalier freshman Rocco Caponi pinned Carolina rookie Alex Maciag in 2:16, cutting the Tar Heel advantage to just three points.
But freshman Justin Dobies got the Tar Heels back on track with a 3-0 victory at 184, and sophomore David Dashiell all but wrapped up the match with a 14-5 major decision win over Scott Smith at 197. Dasheill is now 16-9 on the season.
Sophomore heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky closed out the match with a 3-2 win over the Cavaliers' Nick Smith, improving to 21-9 overall and a perfect 5-0 in dual matches.
The Tar Heels return to action versus No. 7 Nebraska at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium.
