Tar Heels Split on Day One of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team (2-1, 1-0 ACC) rebounded from a 26-12 loss to sixth-ranked Nebraska in the opening round of the 25th annual Virginia Duals and defeated Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia, 25-9, in the consolation bracket Friday at the Hampton Coliseum. With the victory over the Cavaliers, Carolina remains alive in the tourney and will face the loser between second-seeded Missouri and seventh-seeded Chattanooga at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Junior 133-pounder Evan Sola led the way with two pins on the day giving him seven on the season and improving his record to 16-3 on the year. Heavyweight sophomore Spencer Nadolsky was also 2-0 on the day, pushing his mark to 19-9 this season.
Following the Nebraska loss, the Tar Heels responded with seven victories in the 25-9 win over Virginia. Sola pinned Byron Dunlap at 2:31 and David Dashiell, now 15-8 on the year, posted an 8-0 major decision over Scott Smith at 197 to lead the way. Nadolsky downed Nick Smith, 4-0, at heavyweight, while Bobby Shaw (125), Isaiah Britton (141), Chris Ramos (149) and Justin Dobies (184) also posted decisions for the Tar Heels.
Against the top-seeded Cornhuskers, Sola, Nadolsky and freshman Alex Maciag were the lone Tar Heels to post victories. Sola led the way at 133, pinning Nebraska's Derek Pirner in 1:03. Maciag then posted a 7-6 victory over Kyle Gubbels at 174, and Nadolsky posted a 5-3 win over Jon May at heavyweight.
The Tar Heels will face both the Cavaliers and Cornhuskers again next weekend, as Virginia visits Carmichael Auditorium on Friday, January 21, and Nebraska follows on Saturday, January 22.
