UNC Drops Two Straight at ACC Tournament

Tallahassee, Fla. - The North Carolina softball team fell to Florida State 8-0 and Georgia Tech 4-0 on Saturday at the ACC Tournament. With the two losses, UNC is eliminated from the tournament. UNC will find out their postseason fate on Sunday at 8:30 p.m., as the NCAA Tournament field is announced live on ESPNews.
Against Florida State, Carolina fell behind 6-0 in the third inning, as the Seminoles stringed together five hits and capped the scoring off with a two-run blast by Leslie Palmer. Florida State ended the game in the fifth inning, as they scored two runs to make it 8-0 on a Beth Wade double.
Against Georgia Tech, Dionne Streete led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and advanced to second after an error by the Georgia Tech shortstop allowed Jessica Young. UNC failed to bring the runners home though as Emily Price struck out looking and Jessica Graziano popped up to third base.
In the second and third innings, UNC put a runner on with two outs but Georgia Tech's Jessica Sallinger shut the Heels down. UNC's Cox no-hit the Yellow Jackets through four innings, but Georgia Tech got a run on the board in the fourth after Tara Knudsen reached on a hit by pitch and then eventually scored on a double steal to make it 1-0.
Georgia Tech broke open the no-hitter in the fifth as Kristina Hull singled to left field. UNC catcher Theresa Nicholas caught Hull stealing though as she threw a strike to Price for the tag.
The Yellow Jackets made it 4-0 in the sixth as Tech's Kirin Kumar, Tara Knudsen and Katie Donovan led off the inning with base hits. Donovan's double scored Kumar and Knudsen and Donovan came home on a Amy Hosier RBI groundout.
The Tar Heels tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning as Natashalyn Snipes led off with a single, but UNC couldn't keep the rally going as Sallinger retired the side. UNC falls to 43-20 on the season.
