Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina swept a doubleheader with Maryland on Sunday at the UNC Softball Complex, defeating the Terrapins 1-0 in game one and 5-3 in the second game. Dionne Streete hit a solo home run to win game one over Maryland and Crystal Cox pitched a shutout in game one and came in game two in relief to get the wins in both games.
Cox pitched a complete game shutout in the 1-0 win, allowing just one hit and no walks. Cox pitched 1 2/3 innings in game two, allowing no runs to pick up the win. The Tar Heels improve to 35-15 on the season and 5-1 in the ACC while Maryland falls to 21-17 overall.
In the 1-0 win, both teams struggled on offense as Cox and Maryland's Jessica Aditays put on impressive pitching performances. The Tar Heels finally got on he board in the fifth inning as Streete hit her solo home run. The home run proved to be all UNC needed, as Cox didn't allow a hit after the first inning.
In game two, Carolina scored three runs in the second inning to go on top 3-0. Jessica Graziano doubled with one out in the inning and Michelle Hoffmann followed with a walk. Pinch-runner Anna Evans stole second base and then Julia Bove hit a bunt single allowing pinch-runner Erin Dudley to score the first run of the game. Bove then stole second base and caused a throwing error that allowed Evans to cross the plate and make it 2-0. Joslin Higgins knocked in Bove on a sacrifice fly to finish up the scoring in the inning.
Maryland came back to tie the game at three as they scored one run in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. UNC responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as Natashalyn Snipes led the inning off with a triple to right-center field. Snipes scored as Jessica Young reached on a fielder's choice. The Tar Heels added an insurance run as pinch-runner Whitney Gelin scored when and Maryland's shortstop had a throwing error on a Theresa Nicholas single.
Cox pitched the seventh inning, allowing just one hit and no runs to pick up the win. For the day, Cox pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, no walks and striking out ten batters.
UNC next heads to Greensboro to take on UNC-Greensboro on April 14 at 2:30 p.m. in a doubleheader.
