Tar Heels Shutout Evansville 6-0 at Spring Fling

St. Augustine, Fla. - North Carolina defeated Evansville 6-0 on Monday as the Tar Heels got back on the winning track at the Triple Crown Sports Spring Fling in St. Augustine, Fla. Sophomore Crystal Cox pitched a one-hit shutout for UNC and struckout six batters in the win. UNC's runs were supplied in the sixth inning as they scored all six runs in the inning on six hits.
Cox improves to 7-5 on the season and improved her team-leading earned runs average down to 2.38 per game. Cox has four shutouts on the season and came within one hit of a perfect game as she allowed no nwalks against Evansville.
The sixth-inning rally started off with a Jessica Young single to right field. Anna Evans followed with a hit to the pitcher that resulted in an error. With Evans on second and Young on third, Evansville threw a wild pitch that scored Young to make the score 1-0.
Theresa Nicholas followed with a RBI single and Brandi Griffin knocked in Nicholas with a triple to make the score 3-0. Jessica Robinson kept the rally going with a one-out single that drove in Griffin from third. Dionne Streete made it 5-0 with a double to center field and Emily Price wrapped up the scoring streak with a single, scoring Streete from third base.
On the game, UNC got 12 hits and three stolen bases as they improved to 13-10 on the year. The Tar Heels play two games on Tuesday in St. Augustine at the Triple Crown Sports Spring Fling. They take on Robert Morris at 9:30 a.m. and follow with Central Florida at noon.
