Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team swept Charleston Southern 4-2, 8-0 (6) at the UNC Softball Complex on Sunday. Anna Evans delivered a two-out, two-run double with the score tied 2-2 in the sixth inning of game one to lead UNC to the 4-2 win and Ashley Allen pitched a no-hitter in six innings as the Tar Heels won 8-0 in game two. Dionne Streete and Julia Bove each had three hits in the 8-0 win and Jessica Young ended the game with a solo home run to trigger the mercy rule.
The Tar Heels improve to 30-14 on the season and have won 14 of their last 15 games.
In game one, UNC got on the board first, as Natashalyn Snipes singled with one out and then proceeded to steal second and advance to third base on a wild pitch. Jessica Young was walked and Emily Price followed with a single to drive in Snipes.
UNC led 1-0 for the next three innings, but in the fourth, the Buccaneers tied the game on a Candace Rowell RBI single. In the fifth inning Charleston Southern went ahead by a run to make to make it 2-1.
UNC responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as Price hit a solo home run to tie the game at two. The home run was Price's third of the weekend, as she hit two against Coastal Carolina on Saturday. After Price's home run, UNC's Jessica Graziano hit a single and two outs later Julia Bove reached on a bunt single. With two-outs and Graziano and Bove on base, Anna Evans came through with the game winning hit, as she doubled to right-center field driving in both runs.
Crystal Cox struck out three in the seventh inning to pick up the win and improve to 16-8. Cox pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits and struck out twelve batters.
In game two, UNC's bats continued their dominance as the Tar Heels scored eight runs on 13 hits in six innings. Ashley Allen pitched six no-hit innings in just her second start of the season. Allen allowed just one base runner, a walk, and it was the first no-hitter of her career and the third by the Tar Heels this season as Crystal Cox has pitched two so far this year.
The Tar Heels started the scoring right away as they put three on the board in the first inning. Streete led off with a single and two batters later, Young hit a single up the middle. Following a walk to Price, Graziano hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Julia Bove followed with a double that scored Price.
UNC scored again in the fourth inning as Streete hit a bases-loaded single to score Bove. UNC failed to score another run that inning, but they came back in the fifth inning with two runs as Michelle Hoffmann hit a two-run double with two outs, scoring Bove and Price.
The game was put away in the bottom of the sixth inning when Streete and Young both hit solo home runs to make the score 8-0 and invoke the mercy rule. Streete finished the game going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Bove went 3-3 with two runs and a RBI.
For the four-game weekend, Price hit .778 with three home runs, seven runs and six RBI's to lead UNC to a 4-0 record over the two days. UNC next heads to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman at 2 p.m. on March 31.
