Chapel Hill, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team defeated Marshall 1-0 (8), 3-1 as they swept a doubleheader Wednesday at the UNC Softball Complex. In the 1-0 win, UNC's sophomore Crystal Cox pitched the fourth no-hitter of her career and the first extra-innings no-hitter in UNC softball history.
Neither team could get their bats going in game one, as not a single runner was in scoring position until the bottom of the seventh for both teams. Cox dominated, throwing 11 strikeouts and came within an error in the seventh inning of a perfect game. She pitched her eighth shutout this season in leading UNC to victory.
UNC got two hits in the first six innings, as Jessica Young singled in the first and Julia Bove singled in the third, but neither was able to go past first base and get in scoring position. In the seventh, Emily Price walked with one out and Theresa Nicholas followed with a single, but carolina was unable to score as the game went into extra innings.
After Cox shut down the Thundering Herd again in the 8th inning, UNC won the game after Joslin Higgins drove in pinch runner Marissa May with one out in the inning.
In game two against Marshall, Alison Yin kept up the strong pitching for Carolina as she pitched seven innings allowing just one run on four hits and walking none. UNC scored two runs in the third inning to make the score 2-0. Bove led off the inning with a single and Higgins reached on an error that allowed Bove to score all the way from first base. Higgins made it 2-0 on a RBI Sacrifice fly by Dionne Streete.
Marshall cut the lead to one in the sixth inning, but UNC came back to make 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Jessica Graziano double to right field scoring pinch runner Marissa May.
UNC improves to 21-13 on the season as they head to Atlanta, Ga. for the Buzz Classic this weekend. UNC plays Ball State and Georgia State on Friday and Austin Peay and Troy State on Saturday before bracket play starts Saturday Night at the Georgia Tech-hosted tournament.
