Tar Heels Split on Day One of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - After being shutout by No. 1-seed Lehigh in the opening round of the Virginia Duals, the North Carolina wrestling team (1-1) rebounded for a 16-15 win over Kent State to stay alive in the consolation bracket Friday at the Hampton Coliseum. The Tar Heels now face Rider at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Junior Venroy July at 197 pounds and senior heavyweight Ryan Adams secured the win for Carolina over the Golden Flashes. With Kent State having won four straight bouts, July defeated Nick Hiller (3-1), and then Adams won an 11-3 major decision Willie Leonard to lift the Tar Heels to the 16-15 victory.
Also posting victories for UNC in the match were Drew Forshey (125 pounds), Jacob Paul (141 pounds) and Andrew Slack (149 pounds).
In the first match of the day, Lehigh, ranked No. 3 in the latest InterMat Rankings, held the Tar Heels scoreless for the first time in at least 30 years. UNC's closest matches against the Mountain Hawks came in the upper weight divisions. Junior Mark Canty fell to 10th-ranked Travis Frick by a 5-3 count at 184 pounds, July lost to No. 19 Matt Cassidy at 197 (10-5) and Adams fell to Joe Sahl, 2-1. With the victory, Lehigh advanced to face The Citadel in the tournament's quarterfinal round.
Following this tournament, Carolina hosts its first home dual match of the season against NC State Wednesday at Carmichael Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
