Carolina Wrestling Falls to NC State, 26-12

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite victories in the first two bouts of the match, the North Carolina wrestling team dropped its home opener to NC State, 26-12, Wednesday at Carmichael Auditorium. With the loss, the Tar Heels fall to 1-3 in dual matches this season, while the Wolfpack improves to 3-2. The win is the first over Carolina for State since 2002 and the first in Chapel Hill since 2001.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on the strength of victories from junior Venroy July at 197 pounds and heavyweight Ryan Adams. July posted a 4-2 overtime victory over NC State's Zach Garren for his third consecutive dual match win. He is now 14-11 overall and 3-1 in dual matches this season, while Adams took out the Wolfpack's Jainor Palma, 9-3, to run his team-best mark to 17-9 and improve his dual match record to 2-2.
State got on the board at 125 pounds with a 7-5 overtime victory from Jeremy Hartrum over Carolina freshman Bobby Shaw. The Wolfpack tied the score at six with a win from Dan Pacitti at 133 pounds and then moved ahead 12-6 due to a Tar Heel forfeit at 141.
NCSU recorded a win at 149 and a major decision at 157 to pull ahead 19-6, and then Wolfpack senior Dustin Kawa then won via fall at 4:39 over UNC's Garrett Atkinson at 165 pounds to secure the victory for NC State. The win was the 350th dual match victory of NC State coach Bob Guzzo's career.
Tar Heel senior Joshua Lee snapped State's victory streak at six with a 6-4 overtime win over Rick Brownlee at 174 pounds. The victory was Lee's first dual match win this season. Junior Mark Canty also won at 184 pounds to pick up his first dual match win of the year. He is now 14-12 this season.
Carolina returns to action Saturday against Drexel in Newtown, Pa., at Council Rock High School, the alma mater of Tar Heel head coach C.D. Mock. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
