
Carolina Rallies Past Maryland 30-9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team rattled off five consecutive victories including a pin, technical fall and a major decision to rally back from six points down to defeat Maryland, 30-9, this afternoon in Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels improve to 6-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Terrapins fall to 4-5, 0-2 ACC.
Maryland jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as #18 Jake Stork won his 21st consecutive match with a decision over UNC's sophomore Dusty Heist (Meadville, Pa.). Stork scored a take down with 25 seconds left in the third period to take his first lead, 4-3. Heist was not able to escape in the final seconds as Stork got the Terps on the board. Maryland took a 6-0 advantage as UMD's Sal Aquia defeated UNC's freshman David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.) 3-1.
Junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.) ended the Terrapin run with a 10-3 decision over Eric Fehnel as the Tar Heels cut the deficit to three, 6-3. Sophomore Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) earned his first ACC victory of the season and six points for Carolina as he pinned the Terps' Matt Pandullo in 1:01, as the Heels took their first lead 9-6. Sophomore Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) pushed his winning streak to five with a technical fall over Maryland's Mike Lupa, improving to 22-8 and 3-0 in the ACC on the season.
In the battle of the freshman, Carolina's Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) earned four more points for the Tar Heels with a major decision over John-Henry Zarzycki, as the Heels led 18-6. Senior Chris DiGuiseppe (Holland, Pa.) improved to 2-1 in the ACC with a 2-1 tiebreaker victory over Maryland's Adam James.
UMD's Jason Kiessling ended a streak of 21 points for North Carolina with a 6-4 decision over UNC's freshman Garrett Atkinson (Boone, N.C.), as Carolina led 21-9. Senior Jimmy O'Connor earned an injury default over Maryland's Sean Collins to give Carolina an 18-point lead, 27-9.
In the final match, UNC's Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) extended his win streak to seven, with a a 9-3 decision over the Terps' Patrick Cissne.
North Carolina will travel to Duke, Tuesday, February 4, to face the Blue Devils in an ACC matchup. The wrestling match will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor.
