CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- North Carolina stretched its winning streak to eight Thursday with a 78-68 victory over Virginia. The No. 19 Tar Heels (22-6, 11-4) wrap up the regular season Sunday with a home game against No. 5 Duke at Carmichael Auditorium. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
In the first half, Virginia (15-11, 8-7) held the lead until the 10:50 mark. The Tar Heels went on a 17-2 run to go up by 15 points, 28-13 with 6:59 to go in the half. UNC held a 12-point advantage at the break, 33-21.
In the second stanza, the Cavaliers clawed back to within six points twice but just couldn't get over the hump.
"We don't match up on the perimeter with them," Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. "I felt we were O.K., but we missed free throws. I don't think our offense flowed very well. We have to play a little bit smarter."
Freshman Brandi Teamer paced the Cavs with her 13th career double-double of 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, all from the defensive end. Sophomore Anna Crosswhite contributed 13 points. Senior Telisha Quarles added 11 points.
Coretta Brown led UNC with 22 points, while Nikki Teasley added 15 points, including 10-12 from the line. Jennifer Thomas had a season-high 13 points. The Tar Heels set the school record for treys in a season with 192.
North Carolina out-rebounded Virginia, 44-41. UNC went 29-45 from the line, while UVa was 20-31.
