Carolina Wrestling Tops Virginia, 31-9

The UNC wrestling team defeated Virginia 31-9 Friday night in Charlottesville to improve to 2-0 in the ACC and 9-2 for the season, while the Cavaliers fall to 1-6, 0-1 in conference action. The Tar Heels won the first three matches en route to claiming seven total victories on the evening.
North Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Mark Canty posted a 7-3 victory over Will Durkee in the 174-pound weight class. The Tar Heels extended their lead to 9-0 when Nick Richmond pinned Steve Mazzola at 6:33 at 184. In the 197 weight class, North Carolina's Austin Wall defeated Virginia's Andrew DeMartino by a score of 7-2, bringing the team score to 12-0.
Virginia scored its first points of the evening when Ryan Painter defeated Ryan Adams in the heavyweight class, making the score 12-3. Chris Rodrigues of North Carolina recorded a major decision at 125 over Virginia's Byron Dunlap 10-1, increasing the Tar Heels' lead to 16-3. The Cavaliers forfeited both the 133 and 141 weight classes, giving both Evan Sola and Brady Byers victories, making the score 28-3.
The Tar Heels garnered three more team points when Mike Booth defeated the Cavaliers' Paul Dunstan by a score of 5-2. Tim Foley doubled the Cavaliers' team score with his 3-1 victory over James O'Connor, making the team score 31-6. In the last match of the evening, UVA's Don Carlo-Clauss defeated Jake Reynolds of North Carolina by a score of 6-2, making the final team score 31-9.
Carolina is backing action Saturday facing Maryland in College Park, Md.
