CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Talisha Scates scored North Carolina State's last four points, including the game-winning layup with 9.3 seconds left, and the Wolfpack upset No. 17 North Carolina 66-63 Thursday night.
Scates, who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, hit two free throws with 0.9 seconds left to ice the game for the Wolfpack (9-6, 2-2 ACC).
After Scates' final basket, Nikki Teasley had two chances in the last 30 seconds to try to retake the lead for the Tar Heels (13-3, 3-1). But she missed one shot and was called for a charge on a made basket. Nanna Rivers also stole an outlet pass intended for Teasley.
Kaayla Chones 26 points and 16 rebounds for North Carolina State, which held North Carolina to its worst shooting of the season at 26 percent (19-of-73) and dominated the boards 59-40. The Tar Heels also got 16 points apiece from Coretta Brown and Chrystal Baptist, while Leah Metcalf added 14 and Teasley 11.
Scates kept Teasley off balance on a missed 10-footer with 23.7 seconds remaining and North Carolina leading 63-62. Scates took a baseline pass from Amy Simpson and scored to retake the lead for N.C. State.
Brown and Baptist hit a combined four free throws in the last 3:01 to edge North Carolina back in front for the last time.
N.C. State committed 27 turnovers but hit just well enough (40 percent) from the floor to claim its seventh win in eight games over the Tar Heels. N.C. State overcame 16 first-half turnovers to take a 34-31 halftime lead as Chones scored 14 points.
Neither team led by more than four points in the second half.
