CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-North Carolina topped Florida Atlantic 5-0 Saturday afternoon in the Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Field to improve to 23-15-1 on the season and snap a two-game losing streak.
The Tar Heels scored the only run they'd need in the third inning Saturday when left fielder Emily Price walked, advanced to second on a single by right fielder Rosie Gustavson and scored on a single by catcher Natalie Anter.
Carolina scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Designated player Kelly Ramsey doubled to center and was replaced on second by pinch runner Lauren Looper. Second baseman Sarah Young reached on a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice by center fielder Natashalyn Snipes moved Young to second and Looper to third. Both runners scored on a single by Emily Price. After Gustavson reached on a single, she and Price scored on a double by Anter.
The Tar Heels totaled nine hits, led by Anter (2-for-3 with 3 RBI), Gustavson (2-for-3) and Snipes (2-for-2).
Senior Radara McHugh pitched the win for UNC, striking out six and walking three to improve to 14-9 on the season. Nicole Myers (16-10) took the loss for Florida Atlantic, which had four hits against McHugh. Catcher Callie Piper led the way with two singles.
In other Tar Heel Invitational games Saturday, Florida State beat Florida Atlantic 5-4 in eight innings, preserving the win with a dramatic triple play. FSU then shut out East Carolina, 2-0.
On Sunday, East Carolina and Florida Atlantic open play at 10 a.m. UNC and FSU meet at noon for the third time in three days (the Seminoles swept a doubleheader from Carolina on Friday). At 2 p.m., Tar Heel Invitational play concludes with a matchup between North Carolina and East Carolina.
