GREENVILLE, N.C.-The University of North Carolina softball team split a doubleheader at East Carolina Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 in eight innings in the first game and winning 8-2 in the second game. The Tar Heels are 28-17-1 heading into this weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference matchups at Georgia Tech. ECU is now 40-17.
In Game 1 against the Pirates, senior pitcher Radara McHugh struck out 13 and gave up just three hits. One of those, however, was a two-out double by Angela Manzo that scored Keisha Shepperson for the win in the bottom of the eighth.
For UNC, centerfielder Quinn Porter contributed a pair of singles and shortstop Michelle Semmes had a double for the Tar Heels, who totaled six hits in the loss.
In Game 2, Carolina scored four runs in the top of the first and stayed out front for a lop-sided win. Semmes, catcher Natalie Anter and first baseman Beth Olen each contributed two hits and two RBI. Olen had a double and a triple, and Semmes contributed her second double of the day.
Anter led off the top of the third with a solo home run, her first of the season and the 18th of her career. She is now alone atop UNC's alltime home runs list, having started the season tied for first with 17.
Freshman Jessica Robinson contributed a pinch-hit single for the first RBI of her career. Third baseman Dionne Streete also had an RBI single.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Parrott struck out 11 batters in the win.
The Tar Heels return to action this weekend when they face Georgia Tech in Atlanta for single games Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
