FULLERTON, Calif.-The University of North Carolina softball team fell 6-1 to second-ranked Arizona on Friday evening and 2-0 to seventh-ranked Fresno State Saturday afternoon in the Kia Klassic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Tar Heels (17-10-1) finished 1-4 in the tournament, playing five opponents ranked among the nation's top 11 teams.
After finishing third in its four-team pool, UNC took on Arizona in the first game of bracket play. The Wildcats jumped out front quickly with a three-run home run in the first inning. Arizona also had a solo homer in the fifth. Carolina scored its only run in the top of the seventh, when junior Natalie Anter reached base on a single and came home on senior Beth Olen's two-out RBI single.
Senior Radara McHugh struck out eight Arizona batters in the loss and now holds UNC's career record for strikeouts with 570.
In the consolation bracket on Saturday, Fresno State scored runs in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead that would hold up throughout the game. Tar Heel junior Kelly Ramsey went two-for-three at the plate and senior Carrie Bates provided UNC's only other hit.
UNC returns to action Wednesday at Finley Field with a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
