Carolina Softball Opens Season With Split

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team opened the season Saturday by splitting a doubleheader at University of South Carolina. The Tar Heels fell 1-0 in the first game, then beat the 18th-ranked Gamecocks by the same score in the second game.
In the first game, junior pitcher Megan Matthews yielded just three hits to earn the win for the Gamecocks. South Carolina scored in the bottom of the third when Samantha Jennings led off the inning with an infield single. Sophomore Kate Morrison sacrificed Jennings to second, and the freshman moved to third on a Megan Donohoo groundout. With two outs, sophomore Debralee Troesh singled to left, scoring Jennings for the only run of the game.
Despite having runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, the Tar Heels could not capitalize. Matthews got one of her four strikeouts to end the game, leaving North Carolina junior Natalie Anter stranded at second.
Senior Radara McHugh allowed just two Gamecock hits but took the loss for UNC. In the second game, she gave up just three hits and earned the win to improve to 1-1.
North Carolina scored the game's winning run in the top of the seventh. Anter singled with one out and junior Sarah Young entered the game as a pinch runner. Young moved to second on an error by Morrison and advanced to third on a groundout. She scored to give UNC the 1-0 on a wild pitch by freshman Stacey Johnson, who struck out seven Tar Heels while walking none.
UNC (1-1) is back in action on Saturday, when the Tar Heels kick off their home schedule with a doubleheader against Elon at Finley Field. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
