Carolina Wrestlers Take A 24-12 Decision Over Maryland

The University of North Carolina wrestling team remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 24-12 victory over Maryland Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 8-4 overall, 4-0 in the ACC, while Maryland falls to 5-4, 1-2 in conference action.
Carolina held a narrow 10-9 lead after six bouts, but a trio of wins by Clint Osborn, Matt Kenny and Chris Collins gave the Tar Heels 14 points and put them comfortably ahead, 24-9.
Osborn defeated Bob Vorhies 2-0 in the 197-pound match. Osborn took a 1-0 lead into the final period and was able to amass almost two minutes of riding time in the final stanza to take the victory.
Kenny dominated James Taylor from the start of their heavyweight bout, scoring two near falls in the first period, before pinning Taylor at 4:24 of the match. Kenny has now won six consecutive matches since returning from a mid-season injury.
Collins used an eight-point second period to carry a 12-2 lead into the third period in his 125-pound match against Joe Guzzio. Collins scored a takedown and a near fall in the first 90 seconds of the period to capture a 17-2 technical fall at the 6:27 mark.
JohnMark Bentley improved his season record to 25-1 with a 20-8 major decision over Bryan Robinovitz at 149 pounds, while Corey Bell's 4-1 decision over Sal Aquia at 174 gave him a 20-5 record for the year.
Also victorious for the Carolina was Chris DiGuiseppe who decisioined Rob Booth 3-0 at 157 pounds. DiGuiseppe went into the third period leading 1-0 and a penalty point to Booth and riding time gave DiGuiseppe the 3-0 decision.
Nick Richmond suffered a narrow 7-6 loss to Maryland's Jake Stork in their 184-pound match. Stork scored a two-point takedown in the final 30 seconds of the match to give him the final advantage. Jason Wilson and Mike Booth also lost one-point matches. Wilson fell to Josh Weidman, 3-4, at 165 pounds, while Booth lost a 5-6 decision to Mark Mansueto at 141.
Also competing for Carolina was Brad Byers who lost an 8-2 decision to Brandon York in a rematch of last year's ACC Tournament 133-pound final.
Coach Bill Lam's squad concludes the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 15, when arch rival NC State makes the trip to Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels defeated the Wolfpack, 16-14, in their first meeting this season.
