Tar Heel Wrestlers Sweep UNC Greensboro

The University of North Carolina wrestling team defeated UNC Greensboro 41-0 Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Auditorium. Four Tar Heels scored major decisions, while two others won by fall in helping coach Bill Lam's squad push its record to 3-4, 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The afternoon was highlighted, however, on decisions by Carolina freshmen Mike Booth and Jake Reynolds.
In the third match of the day, Booth faced Spartan senior Corey Williams at 141 pounds. Down 1-0 in the third period, Booth scored a reversal with 1:02 remaining to move ahead 2-1. Booth also scored a two-point near fall in the closing seconds to take the match 4-1.
Reynolds defeated Nate Parmenter by an 8-6 margin in two overtimes in their 165-pound match. Reynolds led most of regulation, but Parmenter was able to score a takedown and a two-point near fall in the last 10 seconds to knot the score at 6-6. Neither wrestler scored in the first overtime, but a Reynolds reversal at 0:18 of the second extra period gave him the victory.
Sophomore Nick Richmond scored Carolina's only pin of the day, defeating Josh Blocks by fall in 3:29 at 184 pounds. Redshirt freshman Chris Collins was also impressive in defeating Tony Stewart by technical fall, 16-0, at 4:45 of their 125-pound match. Collins had four near falls in the match to account for 12 of his 16 points but wasn't able to keep Stewart down for the pin.
Tar Heels winning by major decision were Brad Byers over Wade Cecil 12-5 at 133 pounds, Chris DiGuiseppe over Keith Ritter 19-7 at 157 pounds, Clint Osborn over Wallace DuVall 11-3 at 197 pounds and Ryan Adams over Brian King 12-2 at heavyweight.
Corey Bell and JohnMark Bentley were also victorious for the Tar Heels. Bell decisioned Terry Garbis 7-3 at 174 pounds, while Bentley pushed his win streak to 11 matches, defeating Anthony Warren by medical forfeit.
Carolina wrestles Appalachian State in Boone on Saturday night and then returns home to resume ACC competition on Saturday, Feb. 3, hosting Virginia at 7 p.m.
