
Carolina Softball Splits Doubleheader With Gamecocks

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team split a doubleheader with the Gamecocks today at Finley Field. They lost the opening game 4-3, but followed up with a 3-2 victory in the second game.
In the first game, South Carolina got on the scoreboard first when Joyce McMillin scored off an error in the top of the first. South Carolina pitcher Megan Matthews held the Tar Heels hitless through three innings which allowed the Gamecocks to build a 3-0 lead. The Tar Heels got n the board in the fourth, when senior Jen Klesaris doubled and later scored off of sophomore Kelly Ramsey's single. Ramsey scored later in the inning on an error. The Tar Heels would add one more run in the seventh, but couldn't put any more on the scoreboard. Junior Radara McHugh took the loss for North Carolina. She gave up four runs, two earned, while walking two batters and striking out two.
In the second game South Carolina jumped out to the early lead when junior Megan Donohoo scored off of senior Sondra Hall's single. But the Tar Heels answered in the fourth when senior Crystal Henderson doubled to start off the inning. She would score off of junior Michelle Semmes double. In extra innings, with Henderson beginning the inning at second base, Semmes singled home Henderson with the winning run for the Tar Heels. Michelle Semmes finished the second game 3-for-4 with two doubles and the game-winning RBI. Junior Erin Joseph got the victory for North Carolina. She gave up one earned run on four hits and struck out two batters in the complete game effort.
