CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The Old Dominion women's basketball team earned its first win of the season Sunday, 91-77 over North Carolina. Led by freshman center Corrina Turner's 21 points and 15 rebounds, the Lady Monarchs improved to 1-2 on the season, while UNC fell to 2-2.
"We've had some great battles with North Carolina and this one was no different," ODU coach Wendy Larry said. "Corrina Turner had her coming-out party. This was a different team from the one that lost to Syracuse 10 days ago."
UNC led the game 25-13 with 10:38 left in the first half when ODU went on a 20-3 run to take a 33-28 lead with 5:39 to play before halftime. ODU led 42-39 at the half, but UNC drew within one, 42-41, 20 seconds into the second half on a putback by freshman center Candace Sutton. ODU junior guard Sharron Francis then hit a three to put her team up by four, and the Tar Heels could not get closer than three points throughout the rest of the game.
ODU held a 47-33 rebounding advantage and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds.
"If you look at the stats sheet, the bottom line was rebounding," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "I'm really disappointed in our team for not doing a better job of blocking out and rebounding."
In addition to Turner's double-double, senior forward Hamchetou Maiga scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds. Also in double figures for ODU were Francis with 15 points and sophomore guard Alli Spence with 13.
Senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale led UNC with 27 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Coretta Brown scored 14 points, 12 of them in the second half. Senior guard Leah Sharp had 13, all in the first half.
UNC and ODU last met in 1994, when the Tar Heels won a second-round NCAA Tournament game 63-52 at Carmichael Auditorium. Old Dominion now leads the series 11-3.
The game was played in the Dean E. Smith Center because Carmichael Auditorium, where the women's basketball team usually plays, was hosting a UNC wrestling meet. The Tar Heel women last played a game in the Smith Center in 1998.
North Carolina plays next on Monday, hosting East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium. Old Dominion is back in action on Sunday, Dec. 3, when the Lady Monarchs play at Virginia.
