UNC Women's Basketball Tops Syracuse, 81-68

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-The University of North Carolina women's basketball team earned its first win of the season at Syracuse Sunday, 81-68. Playing before a crowd of 756 at Manley Field House, UNC came back from a 38-34 halftime deficit to even its record at 1-1 on the season.
Senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale and sophomore guard Coretta Brown led Carolina with 23 points each. Brown's total was a career high, and she also added a nine assists and a career-high nine rebounds. Barksdale led the Tar Heels in rebounds with 13. Senior guard Juana Brown also scored in double figures with 13 points.
Syracuse shot 44 percent in the first half and won the rebounding battle 28-14 en route to a 38-34 halftime lead.Over the last 5:36 of the first half and the first 1:22 of the second half, however, North Carolina went on a 21-4 run that produced a 39-38 lead. Syracuse tied the game at 39 and 46, but the Tar Heels never surrendered the advantage.
Syracuse senior Beth Record posted a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds. Leaf Newman added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Orangewomen.
The Tar Heels, ranked 22nd and 25th in the national polls, return to action on Tuesday against North Carolina A&T. The Tar Heels host the Lady Aggies at 6:30 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium. A UNC men's basketball exhibition against the EA California All-Stars will follow.
