CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a double-header that served both as a season-opener and as a warm-up for this weekend's Triangle Classic, North Carolina dropped a pair of games to Minnesota, 3-1 and 1-0.
"Both teams played well," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "The pitching was solid, the defense was solid and there was some good hitting."
Catcher Erin Brophy's two-RBI double in the fourth inning won the first game for Minnesota. With two outs, Brophy knocked in Michelle Bennett, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Angel Braden, who reached on a walk. Bennett had the Gophers' other RBI, doubling to score Shannon Beeler in the sixth.
UNC's Rosie Gustavson scored in the fifth on a double by Michelle Semmes, who was 3-for-4 in the game.
In the second game, which was called after six innings due to darkness, Minnesota leadoff batter Steph Midthum scored on an error in the first inning.
Both UNC and Minnesota now look toward the 24-team Triangle Classic, which begins on Friday at Walnut Creek Park in Raleigh. Minnesota is the event's defending champion.
"We'll use these games as a positive," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "We played well against a good team and we want that to be a catapult for the weekend."
