CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina swept visiting UNC Charlotte in a softball doubleheader Tuesday, 9-1 and 8-0, to improve to 40-20 for the season. The Tar Heels totaled 24 hits (nine in the first game, 15 in the second) and were led by first baseman Beth Olen, who was 5-for-7 while celebrating her 20th birthday. "We were really hitting on all cylinders today," said UNC coach Donna Papa.
In the first game, sophomore pitcher Radara McHugh earned her 26th win of the season, a UNC record. She gave up five hits and struck out five to improve to 26-13 on the season. McHugh, this week's ACC Pitcher of the Week, also holds the UNC record for most innings pitched in a season with 248.2. "I'm really proud of Radara and how strong she has been for the whole season," said UNC pitching coach Beverly Smith. "She has really been a leader on the mound and she is certainly deserving of the Carolina record." Junior Crystal Henderson led off the game with a solo home run and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. The eight-run margin ended the game after five innings.
In the second game, Olen's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth put the Tar Heels up 8-0 to end the game. Sophomore shortstop Michelle Semmes went 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBI and Olen was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Erin Joseph struck out four to earn the win, her fourth shutout of the season. Her season record is now 12-7.
The Tar Heels host East Carolina on Thursday for their final home game of the season. The doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m. at Finley Field.
