Softball Team Splits with Florida State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina split its softball double-header with Florida State Friday afternoon, winning the first game 6-0 but losing the second 8-3. Carolina is now 29-17 (2-2 ACC) heading into this weekend's Tar Heel Invitational.
In the first game, UNC scored four runs in the first inning, three of them coming on sophomore Beth Olen's home run over the centerfield fence. The Tar Heels scored another run in the second by knocking out four consecutive singles against FSU pitcher Jen White. UNC scored its final run in the third on an RBI single by senior Colleen Lefferts. Carolina pitcher Radara McHugh earned the win, giving up just two hits in her seventh shutout of the season. White took the loss for FSU
In the second game, each team scored a first-inning run before the Seminoles exploded for five runs in the top of the second on five singles and two UNC errors. FSU added another run in the third and one in the seventh. Carolina picked up a run in the fourth when Natalie Anter singled to lead off the inning and her pinch runner, Bree Blythe, subsequently scored on an FSU error. In the fifth, junior Crystal Henderson tripled to right and scored on Lefferts' single. FSU pitcher Stacy Venable earned the win for FSU and McHugh took the UNC loss.
Carolina is in action this weekend at its own Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Field. On Saturday, UNC plays Florida International at noon and Florida Atlantic at 4 p.m. On Sunday at noon, the Tar Heels will face off again with Florida State, then close out the round-robin tournament against Southern Mississippi at 4 p.m.
